RTP (Return to Player) is a term many newcomers to an online casino may be unfamiliar with. Yet the casino RTP for any game - be it slots, cards or bingo - is a hugely important factor. This guide will help explain what RTP percentage is and why it’s always featured in online casino games.
You’ll learn how to find RTP percentages on a slot machine and what it means for you when playing in the Unibet Casino. Understanding Return to Player percentages is a great help to casino-goers who want to get more for their money and chase better payouts.
Amazingly, even experienced gamers don’t always look out for the RTP but it can prove a good metric when deciding which online slots to play.
So don’t worry if you’re not sure what RTP is, Unibet is here to help. What’s more, we’re also running a promotion featuring games with 98% RTP! You can read more about those further down this guide.
What is RTP (Return to Player) in Slots?
RTP stands for Return to Player and describes the likely payout a slots player will receive for every £1, $1 or €1 they wager. It is the ‘return’ a player should expect to earn on average when playing a slots game.
An average slot machine RTP ranges from around 93% to 97%. This means that if you bet €1, on average you will receive between €0.93 and €0.97 back. Of course, not every bet on a slot machine is a winner, while some bets trigger massive payouts. So, the RTP on the game ensures the average is consistent over multiple bets.
The reason the RTP is not 100% is because an online casino will take a small cut of every bet placed as its profits. This cut is called the House Edge or House Advantage. Now, this doesn’t mean the casino will win every time, and there is always the possibility of the player nailing a mega jackpot win.
However, were the house edge not to exist then casinos would be unable to offer the range of fun and exciting slots that you can play on today!
Unibet has an average RTP of 96.3% across our games. This means that our players collectively receive back 96.3 cents for every €1 they wager. The 3.7% remaining is Unibet’s profits.
We work hard with game developers to ensure a fair return to players and are constantly working to improve our range of games in the Unibet Casino. The house edge is something found in every casino game in the world, be it slots, blackjack, roulette or bingo. But the edge is never too big to completely kill the chances of you earning a massive payout.
How does RTP in Casino work?
Return to Player percentages have been part of the casino world for decades and are a vital component of how casinos work. When electronic slots began to appear in casino halls in the mid-20th century, programmers were able to set and change the RTP to suit the casino and player.
The birth of the internet age saw online slot machines develop in the 2000s as more and more people began playing casino games at home. And casinos worked hard to ensure that their online slots matched the same thrill and excitement levels players experience in Las Vegas and Monte Carlo.
Because of this, online slot machine developers committed to keeping RTPs roughly the same as those ‘real life’ casino slots. In fact, many offer higher RTPs than can be found in a casino hall.
The RTP works by using a random number generator (RNG) that feeds into each online slot game. These algorithms create a pattern that is converted to the game display. If that pattern produces, for example, a row of matching symbols on a payline, then a win is triggered.
This RNG has a built-in win percentage that is the RTP. A game developer will decide what the RTP is on their game, which for slots usually ranges between 93% and 97%, and set the RNG with the algorithm. The developer must be careful not to set too low a percentage, as fewer people will play on the game. However, too high a percentage and the game may not be profitable.
One feature that online slot machines have over ‘real life’ slots is the bonus rounds. Almost all online slots will have bonus capacity, which comes in the form of free spins, bonus games, spin wheels and even lucky dips. These bonuses are part of the RTP of the game and players who secure them can be set for a big payout.
Common bonuses such as Wilds, Scatters and free spins are found in most slots. These are likely to be more frequently triggered than bonus rounds and their presence is also built into the RTP.
Where can I find RTP information?
Every game in the Unibet Casino has RTP information. You can find RTP info in a number of places on your chosen slot machine:
- Instruction manual panel
- Base game screen
Return to Player ratios will always be shown in the instruction manual panel attached to each game. These pages are usually highlighted on the main screen of the game with a ‘?’ or an ‘i’ symbol. Simply click on the icon and scroll down until you find the RTP, which must be clearly stated. It may read something as simple as: ‘The RTP is 96.58%’.
The instruction manual will also give you a game overview, so you can learn in detail how to play. You will also be able to read what Wilds, Scatters and other bonus features are available in the game, and other rules associated with playing.
Many games also display the RTP in the paytable. These information pages show you things like how the bonus features work and the payout size of base-game wins. Like information pages, the paytable must be displayed on every online slots game. The paytable will also include features such as number of ways to win but won’t necessarily show the RTP.
You might also see the RTP displayed at the bottom of the base game, depending on which slot you play.
